Intrinsically Safe Data Logging Solutions showcased at DSEI 2007

Environmental Data Loggers (EDLs) have a number of Military applications including the monitoring of OEM, foodstuffs, vaccine fridges, blood products and pharmaceuticals.

Ordnance, Munitions and Explosives (OME) are deployed in operations and training scenarios worldwide.

For the end user, this means ensuring his stocks are protected from the environment to ensure they remain safe and reliable in use. Exposure to extremes of temperature or humidity can seriously affect the way in which OME behaves and rapid cycling of temperatures can cause both chemical and physical degradation. This can lead to failures in use, unreliability and a drift towards unsafe stores. Under these circumstances, the cost of maintaining stock rises and leads to early disposal and unnecessary procurement activity.

For Range Managers within the various Integrated Project Teams who support the
front line, this means providing suitable advice on storage, handling and use and for monitoring the stocks to ensure comprehensive exposure and maintenance records are created to assist in Through Life Management.

OME currently deployed on operations is supported by a large number of Tinytag
Intrinsically Safe (IS) Environmental Data Loggers (EDL) that are providing valuable recorded evidence of environmental exposure.

The same loggers are also deployed widely throughout the munitions IPTs including
the submarine fleet monitoring torpedoes and trials have even been completed using
loggers attached directly to surface vessel Decoy Rounds.

EDLs have a number of other useful Military applications including the monitoring of foodstuffs, vaccine fridges, blood products and pharmaceuticals.
Using extensive experience gained from these deployments, Portsmouth Aviation, in partnership with Gemini Data Loggers, have taken the known benefits of the Tinytag IS logger and combined them with an innovative IRdA download solution that allows loggers to remain fitted inside weapons containers or attached to palletised loads for up to 3 years.

The new logger, named “OME Defender” has the ability to download its data from inside the container, in the explosives storage area, via a ruggedised IS PDA that meets the most demanding operational and safety requirements. Data handling solutions are provided to allow full interpretation of recorded data.
