Using Data Loggers in Air, Sea & Road Shipments

Tinytag data loggers are widely used to monitor the condition of shipments by air, sea and road.

There are regulations that restrict the transporting of Lithium batteries due to the hazardous nature of lithium.

All lithium batteries supplied in data loggers meet the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Section 38.3 and contain less than 1g of lithium. This means they are excepted from most regulatory requirements and do not require a Declaration for Dangerous Goods.

Provided there are no more than 4 data loggers per package (each containing one lithium metal cell) then they may be transported freely anywhere in the world (including the USA) without any special labelling on the package.

Please note:

  • This only applies to data loggers with batteries fitted (not spare batteries).
  • More than 4 loggers would require a lithium battery handling label on the package (for further information, please see Transporting Data Loggers with Lithium Batteries).
  • A large number of loggers would not be permitted on passenger aircraft in the USA.

CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR CHECKING THE COMPLIANCE OF ANY REPLACEMENT BATTERIES NOT SUPPLIED BY GEMINI. PLEASE NOTE THAT MANY REPLACEMENT LITHIUM ‘C’ CELLS (THE BATTERY USED BY SOME RADIO LOGGERS) ARE CLASSED AS ‘DANGEROUS GOODS’ BECAUSE THEY CONTAIN MORE THAN 1g OF LITHIUM.
