Transporting Data Loggers with Lithium Batteries

Most of Gemini’s Data Loggers are powered by lithium batteries (‘lithium metal cells’) which have regulations restricting their transportation by road, sea or air due to the hazardous nature of lithium.

Most data loggers being used for logging applications will be exempt from these regulations (see Using Data Loggers in Air, Sea & Road Shipments) however when shipping larger quantities (e.g. returning more than four loggers to Gemini for calibration) the regulations must be complied with.

The shipping details given here are general guidelines that cover to the majority of cases, but customers outside the United Kingdom are advised to check their local regulations and any carrier specific requirements.

All loggers EXCEPT Tinytag Radio

1. Pack loggers in strong outer packaging to protect them from damage.
2. Attach a Lithium Warning Label to the package*.
3. The package must be accompanied by a document (e.g. consignment note) that indicates:

a. The package contains lithium metal cells;
b. The package must be handled with care and that a flammability hazard exists if the package is damaged;
c. Special procedures should be followed in the event the package is damaged, to include inspection and repacking if necessary; and
d. A telephone number for additional information.

4. The words “Lithium metal batteries”, “not restricted” and “PI 970” must be included in the Additional Handling Information on the air waybill, when an air waybill is used.

Tinytag Radio Loggers (All part numbers that start ACSRF-XXXX and TGRF-XXXX)

1. Remove batteries and ship loggers without them.

For further information including the shipment of lithium batteries not in loggers please see the Guidance Document below. This is an IATA document relating to air transport, however it will also ensure compliance with the regulations for road and sea transport which are similar.
