Becoming more energy efficient is important for organisations aiming to reduce their environmental impact, and as a means of reducing energy bills and making financial savings.

Data loggers can be a useful tool in helping organisations monitor energy consumption in line with energy management regulations. Data loggers provide energy usage data, as well as temperature, humidity, CO2, count and other environmental information.

The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is a mandatory energy assessment and energy saving identification scheme for large undertakings (those that have ISO 50001 Energy Management System are exempt).

ESOS is being established by the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in response to the requirement for all Member States of the European Union to implement Article 8 of the Energy Efficiency Directive. In simple terms, an ESOS Assessment requires participants to do three things:

  1. Measure total energy consumption across their buildings, transport and industrial activities.
  2. Conduct energy audits to identify cost-effective energy efficiency recommendations.
  3. Report compliance to the Environment Agency (as the scheme administrator), and keep records.
